Sabella: We deserved to win earlier

Argentine national team coach Alejandro Sabella's has defended his side's performance after an agonising 1-0 win over Switzerland in the World Cup last 16, affirming that the Albiceleste should have prevailed in the 90 minutes before extra time.

An Ángel Di María goal in the final minutes of the extended match finally helped Argentina to victory, after being held by a resolute Swiss team. The nation will face Belgium or the United States in the next round.

"Luckily we could win in 120 minutes but we deserved to win earlier," the trainer told reporters at the final whistle.

"It was un even game, they had two clear chances but after that it was all us."

Captain Lionel Messi echoed Sabella's words, adding that the team had to suffer to get past Switzerland.

"There are no easy games at the World Cup," he asserted after the match.

"The important thing is that we are still in there. We went through the game with a lot of suffering."
