INDEC: April economic activity down 0.5%

The National Statistics and Census Institute (INDEC) revealed today that economic activity in April contracted 0.5 percent compared to the same month last year, while failing to halt the slide towards recession seen since the end of 2013.

The Monthly Economic Activity Estimator (EMAE) is used by the state data collectors to calculate variations in Argentina's Gross Domestic Product.

These latest EMAE figures revealed a slight rise of 0.6 percent in April compared to March, while interannual statistics showed a fall compared to April 2014.

As a result, and despite ending 2013 with 3 percent growth, the economy has entered into recession after accumulating two consecutive quarters of negative growth. The measurement of economic activity was changed by INDEC in March, altering the base year from 1993 to 2004.
