Sabella: Maradona, Messi both crucial to Argentina at World Cup

Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella has affirmed that both Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi occupy a special place in the nation's football history, as the trainer prepares for tomorrow's World Cup last 16 clash against Switzerland.

"Maradona was crucial, and Messi is too," Sabella affirmed in a press conference, when asked by a reporter if the Barcelona star will be as important to Argentina's chances as Diego was in 1986, the last time the country lifted the World Cup.

"Messi is having a great World cup, which we had hoped for as had he, his team-mates, the Argentine public and I am happy with the team and with him."

Speaking before the Albiceleste's first knock-out match, the coach admitted that players such as Messi, or Brazil's Neymar, are relied upon by their colleagues.

"Messi is the best in the world, Neymar is a fantastic player and obviously there is some dependency when talking about those two," he explained.

The Rosario native, 27, has converted four of his side's six goals at the World Cup.
