Lucky Brazil out Chile in penalty shootout

Brazil celebrate after thay won their match against Chile in a penalty shoot out after extra-time in the Round of 16 at The Mineirao Stadium in Belo Horizonte.

A fearless La Roja was in the verge of making World Cup history, but Brazil ended up going through the last-16 stage against Chile 3-2 by penalty shootouts at The Mineirao Stadium in Belo Horizonte.

Chile's Gonzalo Jara missed the vital spot-kick after Neymar had converted for Brazil.

Chile dominated from the start and forced the locals to play a defensive and speculative game. The surprising development of the play shocked native fans, who were reduced to silence in the stands.

Brazil went ahead almost by chance after 18 minutes when Thiago Silva nodded on Neymar's corner and David Luiz was on hand at the back post to bundle the ball over the line, though replays suggested Chile defender Gonzalo Jara got the last touch.

Chile got back on level terms in the 32nd minute when sloppy defending let in Alexis Sanchez, who fired past Julio Cesar from close range.

In the first half, proud Chile had more ball possession than Brazil (55 percent to 45), who didn't live up to its historic reputation, displaying clumsy play rather than jogo bonito.

During the second half, Hulk had a goal disallowed for using an arm to control the ball and the 45 minutes ended in a draw.

The game was even in overtime but Chile almost stole it in the final moments when Mauricio Pinilla hit the bar.

Nervous Brazil was then saved by penalty definition with help from Neymar. The Barcelona forward scored for Brazil together with Luiz and Marcelo, while Aranguiz and Díaz scored for Chile.

Brazil goalkeeper Cesar denied two spot-kicks to Pinilla and Alexis Sanchez, while Gonzalo Jara hit the post in the last shot. Hulk missed his kick for the locals.
