FIFA chooses first stage best player; Messi out of top ten

According to a FIFA statistical analysis, the best player of the World Cup group stage is Colombian James Rodríguez, followed by Croatia’s Ivan Perisic and Brazil’s David Luiz.

The ranking takes into account shooting efficacy, pass percentage and goal assistance, among other items.

FIFA left Argentine icon Lionel Messi, who is currently the best scorer in the tournament and has been elected best player in the three games he played so far, out of the list.

Germany’s Thomas Müller has also been surprisingly left out, and Brazil’s megastar Neymar ranks only number eight in the top ten.
