'My best birthday present would be World Cup'
Argentine captain Lionel Messi turned 27 today in Porto Alegre, where the national squad will face Nigeria tomorrow with the aim of securing the top seed in World Cup’s Group F.
The 3-time Balon d'Or winner celebrated with its teammates at Deville hotel, where they shared a birthday cake. But the entire team is looking forward to a bigger party tomorrow, after the match.
"Thank you so much for all your wishes. My perfect present this year would be to win the World Cup, but we are going one step at a time and the first priority is to win tomorrow's match to finish group leaders," the No. 10 affirmed via Facebook.
Messi was born in Rosario, Santa Fe Province, to parents Jorge Horacio Messi, a factory steel worker, and Celia María Cuccittini, a part-time cleaner.
In a decade-long career as a soccer player he won 21 titles with his club, FC Barcelona, and became the first player to score most hattricks and the only one to be chosen by FIFA as the best player in the world in four consecutives seasons (2010-2013).
