Independiente, Huracán to play for Primera place after thrilling last day

Independiente squandered the chance to grab the last promotion place in the Nacional B after drawing 0-0 at home to Patronato, and will contest a play-off this Wednesday with Huracán to decide who goes up to the top-flight.

The Globo, who needed a victory to keep their hopes alive, drew level with a 1-0 win away to Almirante Brown, a result which also condemned the hosts to relegation to the Primera B Metropolitana.

The team directed by Omar De Felippe went into the last day of the season knowing that their destiny was in their own hands, but they could not break down a dogged Patronato who were determined to spoil the party for the Rojo.

The Entre Ríos side even went close to taking all three points, but Independiente goalkeeper Diego Rodríguez kept firm to keep out the visitors and prevent a disastrous defeat.

Huracán, meanwhile, went ahead in the first half through Gonzalo Martínez's strike, and rode their luck to keep ahead and tie with the Avellaneda side on 67 points after 42 games.

The end of their match was marred by scandalous scenes, with the away team sent fleeing to the dressing room. Almirante fans stormed the pitch in anger at relegation, stealing the clothes off players' backs before Buenos Aires police intervened, arresting several individuals.
