Independiente may return to first today
After a year full of doubts and problems, Independiente will have the opportunity to return to the First Division today, when it hosts Patronato at the Libertadores de América stadium in Avellaneda in the last round of the National B Division tournament.
Meanwhile, Huracán will visit Almirante Brown at the same time (3pm) as it still has a chance to clinch the third promotion spot. The team from Parque Patricios needs to beat Almirante and a defeat for the Reds. Banfield, the tournament champion, and Defensa y Justicia have already been promoted.
If Independiente draws and Huracán wins, they will play a playoff game on Wednesday.
With a victory, Omar De Felippe’s side will secure a spot in the First Division next season and will finally leave this year behind. It was the first time that Independiente was relegated to the Second Division.
The Reds had a poor second half of the season, but found the way to get to the end of the tournament with a promotion spot after winning four of the last five games.
For today’s match, coach De Felippe will probably play with: Diego Rodríguez; Gabriel Vallés, Cristian Tula, Sergio Ojeda, Claudio Morel Rodríguez; Franco Bellocq, Federico Mancuello; Matías Pisano, Daniel Montenegro, Federico Insúa; Sebastián Penco.
Patronato is in 19th place with 48 points, 18 behind Independiente.
