Paris Club deal reached 'without bringing the country to its knees'

President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner headed a government rally in the southern city of Río Gallegos to announce infrastructure works for the province of Santa Cruz.

In her second public appearance since the deal that was reached with the Paris Club group of creditors earlier this week, setting a 9.7 billion dollar dispute, the head of state said the Kirchnerite administration has managed to “resolve what others couldn’t,” respecting “the country’s interests instead of putting it on its knees.”

In an hour-and-a-half speech that was broadcast on national television, Ms. Kirchner praised the role played by Economy Minister Axel Kicillof who headed Argentina’s mission in France this week. The deal – which was clinched without the intervention of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) -, according to CFK, helped to “break up the line of argument of vulture funds and the excuse of the lack of funding,” alluding to the US-based hedge funds suing Argentina over the country’s defaulted bonds more than a decade ago and that refused the the 2005 and 2010 debt restructuring.

“Many had questioned the minister’s youth. That is an euphemism to say that what actually bothers them is the conviction, the ideas used to defend the people and the interests of the country,” the President affirmed and blasted the opposition sectors that criticized the accord.

“When Argentina began to incur in the debt, Axel (Kicillof) had not been born yet and I was only three years old, so listening now that we should have paid all the debt, seems like a joke,” Cristina Fernández insisted.

The head of state arrived in Río Gallegos on Friday. The rally started at noon with CFK addressing politians and supporters from the city’s “Lucho Fernández” municipal gym.
