Boca Juniors midfielder Fernando Gago proved his fitness and declared himself confident as Argentina's World Cup hopefuls carried out their first open training session, while coach Alejandro Sabella named Maxi Rodríguez as the replacement for Ángel Di Maria on the left.

Gago, who had suffered a knee strain which kept him out of the last rounds of the Final tournament, moved without discomfort during the session, occupying a role in the middle alongside regular partner Javier Mascherano.

"The injury is gone," he affirmed in a subsequent press conference, while expressing his mixed feelings ahead of the global football tournament.

"Playing the World Cup is a nervy time, it will be my first. But you have to deal with that, start thinking about the matches when we are closer to the opener, but with great confidence in the coaches and the players to get there in the best shape," he explained.

"We have to be ready and concentrated, try and think about our own game and not so much the opponent."

During the practice, held in the Argentine FA base in Ezeiza, Sabella had replaced Real Madrid's Ángel Di Maria, who will join training at the end of the week, with Newell's star Rodríguez; giving some hints over who will be Di Maria's understudy during the tournament.

There was also positive news for José Sosa of Átletico Madrid. The midfielder was included among the second Albiceleste XI who played against the presumed starting line-up, raising his hopes of being named in the final squad.

Sabella will have to cut his 26-man squad to 23 by June 2. The first team today lined up as Sergio Romero; Pablo Zabaleta, Ezequiel Garay, Federico Fernández and Marcos Rojo; Gago, Javier Mascherano and Rodríguez; Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Higuaín and Sergio Agüero.

That side faced off against Mariano Andújar; Hugo Campagnaro, Martín Demichelis, Nicolás Otamendi and José Basanta; Lucas Biglia and Ever Banega; José Sosa, Ricardo Alvarez and Enzo Pérez; Rodrigo Palacio.
