Teamsters request opening of wage talks

The Argentine Cargo Transport Entities' Federation (FADEEAC) have confirmed that the Teamsters union headed by Hugo Moyano has formally requested the opening of salary negotiations for 2014, in which the union will seek pay hikes of close to 35 percent in the sector.

The union, led by CGT Azopardo chief and fierce opponent of the Cristina Fernández de Kirchner presidency Moyano, formalised their petition ahead of the expiry of the current deal, and had already anticipated that they wished for a raise of 30-35 percent.

Sources from the FADEEAC, however, warn that such a hike was unlikely to be granted to workers in the sector

"No percentages concerning salary demands are mentioned in the letter," the Federation's director of labour policy Lucio Zemborain asserted, as he confirmed that the request had been received.

"Of course we have accepted talks and now we must await the official call to negotiations from the Work ministry."

The FADEEAC representative added that the employers' chamber "still does not have a formal offer to make because we first have to listen to the opinion of affiliated associations across the country."

"This is an activity that varies greatly according to region and cargo types, which is why we will need everybody's opinion," he underlined.

Long-distance drivers' salaries currently oscillate between 14 and 15,000 pesos, meaning that with the 35 percent hike demanded by Moyano, wages could rise to $19,500.

Short-distance drivers, meanwhile, would see their monthly salaries rise from an average of 9 to 10,000 pesos to around $13,500 with the proposed hike.
