Ambassador Castro praises soccer as one of the strongest ties with UK

In a roundtable on soccer, Ambassador Alicia Castro wore an Argentina t-shirt signed by Diego Armando Maradona.

In a roundtable on soccer organized by the Argentine Embassy in London in the wake of Worldcup, Argentina Ambassador, Alicia Castro, highlighted the “cultural links between Argentine and British people” and said “soccer is one of the strongest”.

Argentine journalist Víctor Hugo Morales, former world cup champions Osvaldo Ardiles and Ricardo Villa shared the panel -entitled “Argentina and England: History of a shared passion”- with English journalists Jim White, from The Daily Telegraph and Jimmy Burns, author of bestselling soccer books.

“There are many cultural links between Argentine and British people throughout history,” Ambassador Castro said. “Soccer is, without a doubt, one of the strongest”

Víctor Hugo Morales discussed the origins of soccer in Argentina and the decisive influence British immigrants had in it, while Ardiles and Vila shared stories of Argentina-England matches throughout the history of World Cups.

Burns and White, in turn, exchanged views on the role of soccer in British society and talked about the great expectations that come with every Argentina-England match.

The public at the Embassy recalled landmarks such as Diego Maradona’s goals against England in 1986 and the historic one scored by Ricardo Villa against Manchester City in 1981, considered in England as “the goal of the century”.
