River Plate wants to sign Cambiasso
D’Onofrio says economic problems remains
River Plate’s president Rodolfo D’Onofrio said that the club wants to sign midfielder Esteban Cambiasso who did not have his contract with Inter Milan renewed.
River Plate’s president, Rodolfo D’Onofrio said yesterday that he is very interested in signing midfield international Esteban Cambiasso, whose contract with Inter Milan was not renewed. He has asked soccer manager Enzo Francescoli to get in touch with him. River clinched the Final Tournament title on Sunday.
“Our intention is to hire Cambiasso. We will try to negotiate with him,” said D’Onofrio on La Red radio station. Cambiasso played for River in 2001 and 2002,
When asked about the interest in another former River midfielder, Pablo Aimar whose contract with a Malaysian club has also finished, he reminded listeners that the club continues to have serious economic problems. When D’Onofrio took over the presidency from Daniel Passarella at the end of last year, River Plate had a debt of 400 million pesos with payments due within days.
D’Onofrio also assured that Ramón Díaz’s continuing as coach was never in doubt. The only problem was the extension of Díaz’s contract wrongly authorized by Passarella just before he left with remuneration which the club was unable to pay and it had to be changed.
D’Onofrio compared the celebrations to those of 1975 when River Plate obtained their first title after 18 years and although this time it was only six years, it seemed eternal.
Late yesterday, Lanús missed the chance of qualifying for the next Libertadores Cup by only drawing their last match 1-1 against Newell’s Old Boys. Vélez Sarsfield beat San Lorenzo 3-2 late yesterday in the closing match of the Final Tournament and qualified for the Libertadores Cup.
The super final between the winners of the Initial and Final Tournament, San Lorenzo and River Plate, will be played on Saturday at 9.10pm in San Luis, while the relegation playoff between Colón and Atlético Rafaela is scheduled for Saturday afternoon at the Newell’s OB stadium.
