Cole Porter tribute stands strong amid growing musical scene

By Alfredo Cernadas
For The Herald
After a faltering beginning in the 1960s, the North American musical slowly established itself in the local music market, strongly aided by Pepe Cibrian´s many additions to the genre, often the only to be seen locally. One of the problems here was that players were not trained to sing, act and dance all in one; but an increasing number of academies for actors-singers-dancers started opening while more and more adequately trained, talented, aspiring performers begun showing up at castings. Consequently, different local works started to appear, distancing themselves from their North American counterparts, achieving an increasing audience — and not just in the Corrientes downtown area. Less important items also have their following nowadays.

And it is not only the full-blown works that attract the public. The music per se is oftenly enough, as long as it is well performed. Such is the case of a charming piece that just opened in an almost hidden underground showcase in Martínez. The proposal couldn’t be any more modest, but it compensates with an enormous amount of talent. Not only because it is totally dedicated to Cole Porter’s immortal songs, but also because it is performed by one of the most talented local performers, who has starred in several of the most brilliant bigger productions staged in the theatres on Corrientes Av. Also, she is directed by the brilliant James Murray — trained in Europe, the US and Argentina — who scored a triumph earlier this year with no less than My Fair Lady (in English) for the 50th anniversary of The Suburban players.

The star of Según Cole Porter (According to Cole Porter) is the brilliant Melania Lenoir, one of the most remarkable and busiest local actress-singer-dancers at the moment. Indeed, an ideal choice for this show. She is lovely to look at — surely delightful to hold, as the Jerome Kern song says —, has a stunning stage presence, moves gracefully and dances excitingly. And, of course, she sings beautifully a selection of memorable songs admirably adapted/translated by Marcelo Kotliar, such as I get a kick out of you, From this moment on, I’ve got you under my skin, Night and day, You’re the top, Always true to you and many more, that evokes in oneself the charm, romance and humor of one of the greatest musical composers. Pianist Leandro Becker constitutes a perfect accompanist.
