San Lorenzo left to fly Libertadores flag as Lanús bow out

San Lorenzo were left this evening as Argentina's sole competitor in the 2014 Copa Libertadores, as a 1-0 defeat for Lanus away to Bolivar sealed the Granate's defeat 2-1 on aggregate at the quarter-final stage.

Pegged back in south Buenos Aires by a late equaliser in the first leg, Guillermo Barros Schelotto's men knew that they would have to score at least once in the altitude of La Paz to overcome their Bolivian opponents.

But despite pushing hard, the Grana could not find a way through a determined Bolivar, who also posed a threat breaking on the counter-attack. Lanús' task was made even harder after 50 minutes, when defender Carlos Izquierdoz was given a straight red card for throwing a punch during a penalty-area fracas.

With 10 men, the Argentines began to tire even more, and towards the end Bolivar took full advantage. A loose ball in the area was picked up by Juan Carlos Arce three minutes from the end, and the striker poked home to put the hosts in charge.

A goal for Lanús would have forced a penalty shoot-out, but an exhausted away side could not find the equaliser and join Arsenal de Sarandí in falling at the quarter-final stages. Victors Bolivar move on to face San Lorenzo in the last-four, although the tie will be played after the World Cup in late July.
