The City of Buenos Aires' iconic Japanese Garden yesterday fell victim to a raid by a group of thieves, who took an estimated 350,000 pesos in earnings following the long weekend.

Sergio Miyagi, press officer at the Palermo attraction, confirmed today that the robbery was carried out in the early hours of Monday morning in an office adjacent to the Garden's restaurant.

According to Miyagi, security guards present in the park had their hands tied while those responsible made off with takings.

"At least three people entered at around 4.30 in the morning, the alarms were set off and when security approached to see what was happening, they were subdued with weapons and tied up," he explained.

The press officer added that it was the first time a robbery of this nature had occurred at the popular tourist attraction.

The amount stolen represented the park's takings over the four days of the long weekend marking Worker's Day on May 1 as well as income from the Japanese restaurant operating on the site.

The Japanese Garden is located in the Palermo Forests and was inaugurated in 1967 to mark the visit of Emperor Akihito to Argentina. The park also holds various cultural and sporting events related to Japanese tradition, and is described as "one of the calmest and most relaxing places in the city" by those responsible for its upkeep.

The site is entrusted to the Argentine-Japanese Foundation and is financed with the takings earned through visitors' ticket sales.
