Leftist parties take to streets in Workers' Day marches

Left-wing and activist organisations today carried out two marches to mark Workers' Day, mobilising in the Plaza de Mayo and the National Congress in order to transmit labour and salary demands.

The Leftist Workers' Front (FIT), composed of the Worker's Party (PO), the Socialist Workers' Party (PTS) and Left Socialists, alongside other social and university organisations, rallied in the square outside Government House, beginning their act at 15.30.

The FIT had previously announced that 16 people would speak from the Plaza, including trotskyist leader Jorge Altamira, railway workers' union chief Rubén 'Pollo' Sobrero and the historic head of the Class Combat Current (CCC), Carlos 'El Perro' Santillán.

The parties involved revealed that the main slogans would be "a wage equal to the cost of the family basket, 82 percent of the living wage for pensioners, salary negotiations without limits and the banning of suspensions and sackings."

In Congress, meanwhile, The Socialist Workers' Movement (MST), the opposition faction of the CTA union and the CCC's City delegation began a separate rally at 15.00, where ex-legislator Vilma Ripoli and current legislator Alejandro Bodart were among the speakers.

Kirchnerite activists also celebrated May 1 with their own movilisation, with a march beginning in the tent erected by villa miseria dwellers in the Obelisk and finishing at the Labour minister, "in order to demand recognition for the union of low-paid workers and for popular salary negotiations to be opened across the country."
