Indian elections: Man sets himself on fire and embraces candidate

Indian bystanders attempt to douse the blaze as Bahujan Samaj Party Kamruzzama Fauji and a man named by police as Durgesh Kumar Singhb are engulfed in flames

Indian elections had their own horror movie-like scene yesterday, when a young man set himself on fire and embraced a local candidate during a live TV debate in a local park in Sultanpur town, in northern Uttar Pradesh.

A man -identified as Durgesh Kumar Singh- emerged from a crowd of over 150 spectators and doused in petrol ran to the stage and grabbed the local leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party, Kamruzzama Fauji.

Both the agressor and the politician were engulfed in flames and sustained third degree burns. Both the victims are battling for their lives, a doctor told local IANS news agency.

"People were just too shocked to know what was happening," said local photographer Pankaj Kumar Gupta, whose photos show the men engulfed in flames with spectators fleeing the scene.

The injured were first admitted to the district hospital in Sultanpur and were then referred to a burn unit in Lucknow, the state’s capital, said a statement from the police.

The motives for the attack remain unknown.
