Late penalty revives Independiente promotion hopes

A controversial penalty converted by goalkeeper Diego Rodríguez gave new life to Independiente's promotion campaign in the Primera Nacional B, as the Avellaneda giants dug deep to beat Sportivo Belgrano 3-2 in a thrilling encounter.

Referee Carlos Maglio gave the kick with just 10 minutes left to play, after judging that Sportivo's Federico Martorell illegally pulled down Sebastián Penco. Despite the protests of away players, Maglio was unmoved, and Rodríguez stepped up from his own goal to beat opposite number César Rigamonti.

It was a tough blow for the Córdoba side, who had twice fought back from losing positions. Defender Cristian Tula opened the scoring for Independiente, who were pegged back just before half-time by César Medina before Marcelo Vidal sent them into the break 2-1 ahead.

But the lead was short-lived, as Belgrano fought back once more through Martorell's equaliser. The visitors could even have taken the lead if two simple chances had not been squandered, but it was the Rojo who took all three points in controversial fashion.

The win puts Independiente up to fourth place in the Nacional B, two points behind Instituto who currently occupy the last promotion spot.
