Messi strike seals emotional comeback win for Barca

Argentina captain Lionel Messi struck late in the game to cap a remarkable 3-2 victory for Barcelona away to Villarreal, as the Catalan giants came back from two goals down to win on an emotional evening for the Blaugrana.

La Pulga finished neatly to convert Cesc Fabregas' headed pass in the area, and ensure three points in the first game since former Barca coach Tito Vilanova passed away on Friday.

The predecessor to Gerardo Martino on the team's bench was remembered with a minute's silence before the game, and the loss appeared to weigh heavy on a Barcelona team that started slowly.

Villarreal took full advantage. Cani put the home team ahead seconds before the half-time break, before the lead was doubled by Manu Trigueros who converted with a powerful header into the top corner.

The Blaugrana were not out of the encounter, however. Martino's men found the necessary fortune through two own goals, Villarreal pair Gabriel Paulista and Mateo Musacchio the offenders. And Messi was on hand to finish an excellent collective move from Barcelona just eight minutes from the end, keeping the Catalans alive in the Liga title race.

The win pushes Barca up to second place with 84 points, four behind leaders Átletico Madrid with three games left in the season.
