Banega’s goal gives win for Newell’s
ROSARIO — Argentina international midfielder Ever Banega netted an outstanding goal from outside the box to give Newell’s Old Boys a 2-1 victory over Tigre at the Marcelo Bielsa stadium in Rosario yesterday.
After a boring first half, both teams woke up and played an entertaining game which finished with the visiting side trying to find the equalizer with almost all its men in attack and Newell’s using a counter-attack style. Tigre took the lead in the 50th minutes with a goal scoring by Ariel Nahuelpán, but the host answered quickly five minutes later with Ezequiel Ponce’s equalizer.
Banega gave the victory for Newell’s in the 62nd with a fantastic goal from outside the box. It was the first goal from the midfielder since he arrived at the Rosario club. “I didn’t see when it entered because I fell after the shot. I just celebrated with the fans,” said Banega.
Today, Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata, which shares the lead of the standings with River Plate, will visit relegation threatened Argentinos Juniors at the Diego Armando Maradona stadium at 6.10pm. Also, defending champion San Lorenzo will visit Belgrano at 3pm, Atlético Rafaela will host Colón at 5.10pm, Vélez Sarsfield will face Rosario Central at 7.20pm and Racing will host Quilmes at 8.30pm.
