Vélez start Libertadores tie with narrow defeat

Nacional celebrate following Julian Benítez''''s late winner.
Nacional celebrate following Julian Benítez''''s late winner.
Vélez Sarsfield will have to come from behind in Liniers in order to progress in the Copa Libertadores, after the club was defeated 1-0 by Paraguay's Nacional in the first leg of their last-16 clash tonight.

Both teams had attacked throughout in an even match, but the Fortín's inability to convert a dominance of possession into attacking chances meant the Argentines struggled to impose themselves on Nacional across the 90 minutes.

It was Julian Benítez did the damage for the hosts, netting from short-range after a fluid Nacional move in the final minutes of the match, held in Asunción's Defensores del Chaco stadium.

There was initially some doubt over the goal as goalkeeper Sebastián Sosa staged a last-ditch effort to clear Benítez's low shot. Replays confirmed, however, that the Uruguayan stopped the ball when it was already over the line, and a late Vélez offensive could not avoid defeat on the night.

Vélez will host Nacional in the return leg next Tuesday, with kick-off scheduled for 9.45 pm.
