Javier Cantero resigns as Independiente president

Independiente president Javier Cantero has stepped down as the head of the Avellaneda football club, as the club struggle both on and off the pitch a year after going down to Argentina's second-tier Nacional B division.

According to reports, the under-pressure director moved aside in order to push through a deal with the opposition to his presidency, who had offered to inject 10 million pesos for the payment of salaries into the club.

Second vice-president Claudio Keblaitis will take temporary command of the Diablos Rojos, after Cantero's resignation was accepted today following two-and-a-half years at the head of the institution.
