Queen Elizabeth II turns 88
Queen Elizabeth II turns 88 today. Her birthday was honoured by traditional gun salutes in London, while the monarch spends the day privately, in Windsor Castle.
The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery fired 41 royal salutes at Green Park, in London, using 13-pounder World War One guns drawn by 71 horses.
Later, 62 guns went off from the Tower of London. Before the salute at the Tower, the Honourable Artillery Company played a series of songs to commemorate the Queen’s birthday.
Also, in honour of her 88th birthday, a new official portrait of the Queen by British photographer David Bailey was released yesterday.
The photograph of the monarch was taken at Buckingham Palace in March and commissioned on behalf of the government's GREAT Britain campaign.
