Scioli: No single law can solve crime issue

Governor of the Province of Buenos Aires Daniel Scioli has admitted that there is no easy solution to the issue of crime in the region, also explaining that his passing of emergency laws was a reaction to more violent attacks by thieves and law-breakers.

"Crime problems have become more violent, due to a combination of drug abuse and weapons. That is why we have changed the laws that needed to change, police logistics, prevention programs," the politician affirmed in an interview with La Nación.

"There is no single measure, a single law that can solve a problem of this dimension and complexity."

Scioli recognised during the interview, published today, that a series of shocking "violent episodes" prompted the latest crackdown.

"We are up against delinquents prepared to shoot a pregnant woman, or kill someone to take their mobile phone," he said.

"Evidently I have to seek, within law statutes, the mechanisms that will allow us to start reshaping the state."

The governor also expressed confidence in his ability to win the next presidential election in 2015, in which alongside Sergio Massa and Mauricio Macri he is expected to be one of the leading candidates.

"Cristina [Fernández de Kirchner] is going to leave Argentina prepared. I am in a period of maturity, in which everything that has happened to me seems to have been directly or indirectly prepared for me," he stated.

"I only hope that God and the people give me that chance, because I am convinced I can do it."
