Strike turnout: 'More than 1 million workers'

More than 1 million workers today joined a general strike launched by anti-government unions "paralyzing" activities across the country, the CGT labour confederation leader Juan Carlos Schmidt has confirmed.

“First data shows a strong strike turnout,” Schmidt said during a press conference held today and affirmed pickets blocking main road access to Buenos Aires City have been called by “sectors” that are not part of the unions that launched today’s walkout.

Schmidt, head of the CGT’s dredging and buoy-laying union, pointed out that “more than 1 million workers have paralyzed activities” across the country and urged the federal government to show a “real” dialogue position to address workers’ demands.
