Olivera goal sends Estudiantes back to top

Estudiantes were made to work for three points in the Estadio Único, but a late goal from Uruguayan forward Juan Manuel Olivera finally broke down the resolve of Argentinos Juniors, who succumbed to a 1-0 defeat which leaves the Pincha joint top of the Final championship.

The La Plata club share the summit with Colón and San Lorenzo, all on 21 points, while the reverse leaves Argentinos further mired in relegation trouble.

In a tense game marked by a fierce defensive effort from the Bicho, Estudiantes had to wait until the final stages of the second half to finally find the net.

Having been brought off the bench by coach Mauricio Pellegrini, Olivera was on hand to fire in a close-range rebound, after Argentinos goalkeeper Nereo Fernández had failed to hold on to a shot. The away side tried to fight back, but could not find the equaliser and continue rock bottom of the relegation standings.

The 12th round of the Final was scheduled to finish this evening with the clash in the Estadio Único, but weather issues forced postponement in the night's other game.

Olimpo and Gimnasia de la Plata's clash in Bahia Blanca fell victim to the rain, and will be rescheduled during the week.
