Central upset Newell's to take Rosario Derby

A solitary second-half goal from Franco Niell was enough to give Rosario Central a much-cherished victory over bitter rivals Newell's Old Boys, helping the Canalla to a 1-0 win away from home that sealed a double in this season's Rosario Derby.

The team coached by Miguel Ángel Russo kick-started their 2013 Inicial campaign last year with a 2-1 derby win in the Gigante del Arroyito stadium, and Central were on top throughout the early stages of today's clash against a strangely subdued Newell's.

The deadlock was finally broken just minutes into the second half. Some good work by Rafael Delgado out wide left Niell with the chance to hit the opener. The former Argentinos Juniors forward made no mistake, hitting low to beat Nahuel Guzmán and silence the Marcelo Bielsa stadium.

Newell's still struggled to come to terms with the match and rarely threatened to hit back; Martín Tonso's poorly hit effort over the bar towards the end one of the few times the Lepra worked their way into a promising position.

The away team were able to hold out despite a frenetic end to the game and goalkeeper Guzmán's appearance in the area for a corner, taking home a memorable win against their city neighbours.

Central's win puts the side up to joint-sixth in the table with 18 points, alongside Estudiantes and San Lorenzo (both play later on Sunday). Newell's, meanwhile, remain rooted in mid-table and lose an unbeaten run of 17 matches in front of their own fans.
