Venus surprised before quarters
CHARLESTON, South Africa — Despite advancing with a come from behind win on Wednesday against Chanelle Scheepers, Venus Williams was ousted from the Charleston Family Circle Cup yesterday by Canadian Eugenie Bouchard 7-6 (8-6) 2-6 6-4. The surprising loss, which knocked off the 28th ranked player in the world, destroys all hopes of one of the Williams sisters taking the title home — which her number one ranked sister has done twice in her career.
Serena, who was defeated and shocked by 78th ranked Slovakian Jana Cepelova on Tuesday, cited time to regroup from her recent first place finish at the Sony Open as reason for the loss.
As for the notable survivors advancing into the quarterfinals of this offbeat tournament — Italian Sara Errani defeated Peng Shuai of China 7-6 (8-6) 7-6 (7-5); and Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova won a third round match over Brazilian Teliana Pereira in straight sets.
