This November 7, 2009 file photo the main gate to Fort Hood military base in Texas. The Fort Hood military base in Texas ordered all staff to take shelter April 2, 2014 amid media reports of an active shooting situation that had left several people wounded.

One person was killed and 14 were wounded today in a shooting incident at the Fort Hood military base in Texas, a US official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The official, who noted the information was preliminary, said he could not confirm the status of the shooter.

The US Army base in central Texas was the scene of a shooting rampage in 2009, officials said.

US President Barack Obama said he was "heartbroken" that another shooting had occurred at the Fort Hood Army base and described the situation there as fluid.

"We are going to get to the bottom of exactly what happened," Obama told reporters in Chicago, where he is traveling for Democratic fundraisers.

"We're heartbroken that something like this might have happened again."
