Menem charged over La Rural sale
BA City Federal Court revoked an earlier ruling and ordered the prosecution of former president Carlos Menem, as part of the investigation of the under valuated selling of the Argentine Rural Society terrain in 1991.
In its decision, the second Court also confirmed the prosecution of Menem’s Economy Minister Domingo Cavallo, while putting in place an embargo on the former president’s assets.
The ruling signed by Judges Horacio Catanni, Martín Irurzun and Eduardo Fara affirmed:
“The evidence gathered show that those charged took part in an operation jointly devised over the head of Congress and other entities whose opinion was not consulted, and by doing this, they agreed an under-valued sale for the transaction”.
Menem served as Argentina’s President for two consecutive terms from 1989-1999; while Cavallo returned to office in 2001 as the Economy Minister of Fernando De La Rúa's brief administration, which was forced to resign in December of that year followed the social-economic crisis unleashed in that period.
