Independiente's Cantero denies resignation

Independiente president Javier Cantero has denied that he will present his resignation to the board of the Avellaneda institution, who went down yesterday evening to Sarmiento to further deepen their current footballing malaise.

"I have not resigned, I do not know where they got that from the press conference," the chief asserted in a text message to a club journalist, contradicting speculation that had circulated over his future following the latest defeat.

The Independiente board of directors are expected to hold a meeting today, without Cantero, at around 3pm, according to reports from Noticias Argentinas.

According to several witnesses, Cantero told coach Omar de Felippe that he was responsible for the club's problems and as a result he would step down in order to alleviate tension around the Rojo.

But this morning the president appeared to doubt the decision made in Junín, leading him to issue the denial.

While Cantero mulls his future new graffiti condemning his regime appeared at Independiente's Avellaneda headquarters, which was under police guard early in the morning to avoid becoming the target of a spontaneous demonstration.

Many Rojo fans have called for Cantero's head, holding the president responsible for the club's first-ever relegation in 2013 as well as financial troubles which include debts of 400 million pesos.
