De Bonafini calls for 'People's Army' in anniversary act

The Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo leader Hebe de Bonafini called today for a new "People's Army", in an act commemorating the 38th anniversary of the beginning military dictatorship that lasted from 1976 to 1983.

"We have to make the armed forces ours, a People's Army that works for the people," the activist, who was accompanied by Defence Minister Agustín Rossi and La Cámpora lawmakerr Andrés Larroque, asserted in her speech.

The Mothers representative opted to hold the rally in the shanty town La Carbonilla, in the City neighbourhood of La Paternal, in a bid to avoid confrontations with other human rights organisations in the main act in Plaza de Mayo.

During her speech, Bonafini praised the government's human rights policy, underlining the social work that the army has begun to carry out.

President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and former leader Nestor Kirchner, along with ex-Defence minister Nilda Garré were singled out by De Bonafini, who asserted "they have done an amazing job in changing the army's way of thinking."

And the activist also had strong words for opposition leaders Mauricio Macri and Sergio Massa.

"They are two pieces of rubbish that promise the people things they will not do," she fired, while also calling on the crowd to "not waste our energies in condemning or answering back. The best defence, the best blow we can strike in through our work."

"For every insult, a new project."
