Human rights groups, activists gather to mark 38th coup anniversary

Human Rights organizations and political activists gathered today in  the Plaza de Mayo Square in Buenos Aires, to commemorate the 38th anniversary of the 1976 military coup.

Demonstrators earlier blocked traffic along 9 de Julio Avenue as well as the Metrobus transport lines, as crowds descended on the plaza located in front of Government House.

The march was hosted by the Human Rights Secretariat, Mothers of Plaza de Mayo Founding-Line, Grandmothers, Relatives of Detained-Disappeared for Political Reasons and HIJOS.

Left-wing parties along with other organizations also marched under the slogan “Enough with impunity, adjustment and repression.”

Founding-Line Mothers leader Nora Cortiñas used the occasion to launch a fierce criticism of the Cristina Fernández de Kirchner government, due to the designation of César Milani at the head of Argentina's armed forces.

"10 years ago this government took down two pictures of two genocide perpetrators by one repressor of the era," Cortiñas fired, referring to the removal of a picture of former de facto president Jorge Videla.

"The same government 10 years down the line has put a member of that state terrorism in charge."

In the neighbourhood of Núñez, meanwhile, an official ceremony to mark the 10° anniversary of the recovery of former ESMA (Navy Mechanics School) clandestine detention centre took place, with Grandmothers leader Estela de Carloto one of the guests.

"We will not be broken. We will carry on fighting for the dreams of our children and the rescue of our grandchildren. Transforming places like the ESMA, full of terror, is an achievement that we managed with Nestor Kirchner's bravery and decision," the activist affirmed during the event.
