City Lawmakers sign request to stop Villa Lugano eviction

Metropolitan Police officers stand in Villa Lugano Papa Francisco settlement on February 28.

Thirty Buenos Aires City lawmakers have signed a request to try to stop the Villa Lugano eviction ratified yesterday by the Penal and Contravention Camera, and presented it to Judge Gabriela López Iñiguez.

The petition, signed by Victory Front, UNEN, MST and Popular Left representatives, demands a “pacific solution to the housing problem” in Villa Lugano.

“We want to avoid a blood bath”, said MST lawmaker Alejandro Bodart, criticizing Metropolitan Police intervention in the matter.

Judge Gabriel Vega had previously ruled to evict the Villa Lugano settlement dubbed “Papa Francisco”, which over 500 families have occupied since February 25 demanding housing solutions, but the eviction was suspended because of the lack of cooperation between Metropolitan and Federal Police.

Yesterday, BA City’s Penal and Contravention Chamber ratified the eviction of the settlement, and ordered the Metropolitan Police to carry out the intervention between 9am and 19pm today.
