La Plata derby victory puts Estudiantes top

An early goal from Franco Jara was enough for Estudiantes to celebrate victory this afternoon away to bitter La Plata rivals Gimnasia, as the Pincha prevailed 1-0 to share leadership of the Primera División with Colón.

With just 10 minutes gone in the La Plata derby, Jara broke free on the left hand side and fired past Fernando Monetti to hand Mauricio Pellegrino's men the lead. Gimnasia, playing a home clásico for the first time in three years, struggled to impose themselves early on despite a fervent home support.

The Lobo showed some improvement in the second half, going forward with more purpose and looking to stretch the Estudiantes defence. But despite a handful of opportunities it was the away side who claimed three points, while Gimnasia finished with 10 men when Facundo Pereyra saw red in the final minutes.

Estudiantes' win earns them a share of the Torneo Final summit alongside Colón, both teams having accumulated 15 points in the first eight rounds of the championship.
