Capitanich: Crime issue will not be solved by more police, cameras

Chief of Cabinet Jorge Capitanich has admitted that crime is an issue in Argentina, while denying that the sole solution to the problem could be found in putting more police officers and CCTV cameras on the streets.

"There is no doubt that criminal activity is a problem," the politician affirmed during today's interview with América TV. He underlined, nevertheless, that "it will not be solved solely with more patrol cars, police officers and cameras."

Capitanich maintained that in order to fight crime it was imperative to also work in the areas of social inclusion and "equal distribution". For the minister, the issue is a worldwide phenomenon related to high levels of urbanisation.

"If you compare [Argentina] to other cities with the highest population densities in Latin America you can see a lower figure," he explained.

"Public safety is a phenomenon with multiple causes. When you build a pavement, a public fence, when you guarantee access to education or health you are acting against insecurity," he added.

"[Criminal] cases happen in different place and this requires a clear definition of responsibility. Public safety is down to the provinces, as stated in a ruling by the Supreme Court.

"What can the national government do? What it already does: order reinforcements, take charge of specific areas which are its duty and establish an intervention mechanism."

Capitanich moved on to criticise the "social misconduct" of some business leaders, blaming them for "abusive" price rises.

"Our problem is business and industrial leaders' social misconduct, they are never responsible for anything by they have an enormous impact in setting prices," he fired.
