Ciudad beat River Plate 1-0
Ciudad’s goal came after 12 minutes through Macarena Rojas (last season’s top scorer) receiving a centre right in front of goal, but she had few chances afterwards against a well-placed defence in which Ivana Dell’Era stood out.
In a fairly even first half, Ciudad opened up more play, but were less dangerous in the circle and River Plate had more goal chances. The second half was a bit scrappy, but River Plate dominated most of the way and came close to equalizing on several occasions. In fact, during the match, River Plate forced five penalty corners to two and had 10 goal shots to Ciudad’s two.
Ciudad was without defender and penalty corner scorer Noel Barrionuevo who was called up this week to reinforce the national team playing in the Odesur Games in Santiago de Chile, but as it turned out, she was not missed much.
It is early to judge, but River Plate, who had reached the title playoffs last season, look stronger and the goals will come. They continue bringing in promising players from provincial leagues. As usual, their coach, former women’s national team coach Sergio Vigil, was a show apart as he never stopped jumping up and down, shouting to give his team instructions. Whether they heard him is something you would have to ask the girls.
GEBA, champions for the last seven years, hosted St Catherine’s and beat them 3-1, although missing a number of national team players. Their goals were scored by Silvina D’Elia, Camila Mas and Micaela Andrade.
The three newly-promoted teams all picked up points. Banco Nación were the only winners — 1-0 at Lomas — but Banco Provincia drew 3-3 at Hacoaj, while Arquitectura drew 2-2 at home with Santa Bárbara.
The first round of the men’s Metropolitan first division tournament will start today at 4pm with the following matches:
