Arsenal down Peñarol in Libertadores triumph

Arsenal de Sarandi continued their bid to reach the last-16 of the Copa Libertadores with a tight 1-0 victory over Uruguayan giants Peñarol, a result which installed Gustavo Alfaro's men comfortably into second place in Group 8 at the half-way stage.

Seeking their second victory of the competition, Arsenal were handed the perfect start when they took the lead just four minutes in. Cristian Campestrini's long clearance was fumbled by Peñarol goalkeeper Juan Castillo, and Julio Furch was on hand to drill home the rebound.

Despite ceding the majority of possession against the Manya, the Argentine team continued to enjoy the best chances of the match. Milton Caraglio went closest to adding a second after half-time, with a fierce shot from deep that rattled the crossbar.

Franco Zuculini also went close to goal, Castillo compensating for his earlier mistake with a fine save, but Arsenal ultimately had to settle for the one-goal advantage that nevertheless leaves them well-placed to make the next round.

With three games gone the Arse find themselves second behind Santos Laguna, with six points. That tally, however, provides a four-point cushion above Venezuela's Deportivo Anzoategui, with the first two teams from each group qualifying for the knock-out stages.
