Late goal frustrates San Lorenzo's Copa Libertadores hopes

San Lorenzo appeared to be on course for a second consecutive victory in the Copa Libertadores group stage, until Gustavo Canales hit back to give Unión Española a late 1-1 draw and deny the Argentine side the chance to top Group 2.

Having overcome Independiente del Valle in their last Copa run-out, the Cuervo were confident heading into tonight's clash against the Chilean side, who had opened their campaign with two draws.

In an entertaining match, Edgardo Bauza's men had numerous chances to open the scoring but could not find take advantage against Española keeper Diego Sánchez.

The opening goal arrived with 21 minutes on the clock, in slightly scrappy circumstances. Angel Correa had done well to break through the Chilean defence; and when the youngster found his way to the net blocked, striker Mauro Matos was on hand to hit low past Sánchez.

But the team based in Bajo Flores could not extend their lead, and were punished seven minutes from the end. Canales, formerly of River Plate, bundled in from close range to grab Española a share of the points.

A win would have seen San Lorenzo leapfrog Botafogo at the top of the group, after the Brazilians fell to a last-minute defeat against Independiente del Valle. As it stands, following three matches all three teams share the lead of Group 2 with four points, while Española lie just one behind in last place.
