Capitanich, Radical senator clash during Upper House briefing

Cabinet Chief Jorge Capitanich today came under fire from Radical senator Laura Montero as he addressed Congress, the pair exchanging strong words after Montero accused the government official of falsifying inflation figures for the province of Mendoza.

The Mendoza senator took the opportunity to question Capitanich following the end of his opening speech, in what was his first address before the Upper House since taking over as Cabinet Chief.

Montero complained about the "orders" received by governor Francisco Pérez from the presidency as well as the lack of funds sent by the national government to Mendoza. She also revealed that the province had stopped measuring inflation and that a lack of confidence in consumer price indexes had led to problems in the wine industry's salary negotiations.

"Pérez said that he would give 15 percent [raises] and the unions are asking for a minimum of 35 percent," she fired.

The vice-president of the UCR bloc further contradicted Capitanich's statement that regional economies "were growing," stating that the wine industry no longer yielded profits.

Montero later angrily interrupted the cabinet chief during his rebuttal of her points, leading to an angry stand-off between the two while Senate President Amado Boudou tried to restore calm. Tensions peaked when Capitanich told the senator: "You are neoliberalism's faithful agent in Argentina," before silence was reached and the session continued as planned.
