Awesome Atlético storm into Champions League quarters

Atletico Madrid midfielder Raul Garcia (L) celebrates with Diego Costa after scoring during the Champions League last-16 second leg
Atlético Madrid were simply too good for Italian giants AC Milan tonight as they destroyed their rivals 4-1 in the Champions League last-16, ensuring an emphatic 5-1 victory on aggregate for the team coached by Diego Simeone and passage into the tournament's quarter-finals.

Protecting a slender 1-0 advantage from the opening match in the San Siro, the Colchoneros wasted no time in extending their lead. New Spain international Diego Costa turned in an improvised volley during the opening minutes to leave Milan further behind.

Kaka gave the Rossoneri renewed hope with his goal midway through the first half, but it was little more than a brief respite against Atlético's ferocious attacking. Arda Turan restored the lead for the hosts, before late goals from Raúl Garcia and Costa put the result beyond doubt.

The club from the Spanish capital make the last-eight for the first time since 1997, when Argentine coach Simeone was a player in the team.

In the evening's other tie, Bayern Munich held on for a 1-1 draw that saw them comfortably into the next phase, at the expense of Arsenal.

Having gone down 2-0 in the Emirates Stadium, the Gunners were always facing an uphill battle against Pep Guardiola's seemingly unbeatable Bundesliga and Champions League holders.

Bastian Schweinsteiger broke the deadlock for the hosts with just under an hour played, before Germany international Lukas Podolski hit straight back against his compatriots with a fierce left-footed strike.

Despite ending the Bavarians' 13-game winning streak Arsenal could not find a way through to seek the two goals needed for victory, going out of the competition 3-1 on aggregate.
