Delbonis ready to play the Davis Cup
Ranked 44th after Sao Paulo title
Federico Delbonis, who climbed to 44th place in the world ranking, returned to Buenos Aires after taking his first ATP title and expressed his intention to play in the Davis Cup playoff.
Azul-born tennis player Federico Delbonis, 23, said yesterday — after clinching his first ATP title in Sao Paulo on Sunday — that he feels “solid” in the work he is doing and that he is ready to play for Argentina in the Davis Cup playoffs in September, where the team will seek to stay in the World Group.
“The title will not change my playing style, it will only consolidate what we are doing. The experience sometimes makes the difference in crucial moments,” Delbonis, who climbed 17 places yesterday to be ranked 44, told to the TV channel TyC Sports after arriving in Buenos Aires.
Delbonis earned his first ATP title on Sunday after beating Italian Paolo Lorenzi 4-6 6-3 6-4. It was his second final as he lost to Italian Fabio Fognini in Hamburg last year after his remarkable semifinal win over Swiss Roger Federer.
“I think that I was a bit nervous yesterday (on Sunday) because I wanted this title too much. I did not realize what I had done last year until the tournament ended. Both finals were similar but it is always better to win,” he said.
The Argentine also expressed his intention of taking part of the Davis Cup team that will play the playoff in September. “I will give the Davis Cup the place it deserves. I am ready to debut when the captain decides. I will do my best in order to make Argentina a great team,” he added.
