Villa Lugano eviction suspended, Metropolitan Police retreat

The Villa Lugano eviction ruled earlier today was suspended by Judge Gabriel Vega because of the “lack of cooperation between Metropolitan and Federal Police.”

Earlier today, Judge Gabriel Vega ruled to evict the Villa Lugano neighborhood lands that remain occupied by a group of families since Monday.

Vega ordered the “pacific eviction” of the lands that around 500 families from the nearby Villa 20 shantytown took over in demand for housing solutions.

Following the news of the court ruling, one of the protesters in Villa Lugano warned they “will resist without generating any violence.” “No one moves from here,” the man told reporters.

After moments of high tension between the Metropolitan Police and protesters, the force retreated as Judge Vega blamed the Federal Forces for disobeying his sentence.

Security Secretary Sergio Berni had warned earlier this morning that the federal police will not be involved in the Lugano eviction.

“If there is a Metropolitan police with 5,000 officers they can do it,” Berni considered throwing the ball in Mayor Mauricio Macri’s court after days of rising criticism by the federal official accusing both the BA City government and the attorney in charge of the case of failing to settle the land dispute.
