Couple discovers gold treasure in back yard
A couple from Sierra Nevada in the US state of California found a gold treasure in their backyard worth US$10M while they were walking their dog, local newspaper San Francisco Chronicle stated today.
The couple, who wish to remain anonymous, noted “the edge of a can was slipping out of the grass, near a tree”, according to the newspaper. They unburied the can, took it home, and discovered it was full of gold coins.
“It was surreal, difficult to believe at first”, said the man who discovered the treasure.
They decided to keep digging and rescued another 7 cans. In total, the 8 cans contained 1,427 gold coins.
The coins belong to the 1847/1894 period and are in perfect conditions. They are worth US$27,980, but specialists believe they can be auctioned for almost US$10M.
The treasure could have been hidden during Californian “gold fever” in the 1840’s, when gold was found and extracted from Sierra Nevada’s mountains, specialists said.
