Injury forces Del Potro out of Dubai Open

Juan Del Potro of Argentina walks off the court after retiring at the end of his first set against Somdev Devverman of India due to an injured wrist during the second day of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships on February 25, 2014
Argentine tennis star Juan Martín del Potro was forced to abandon a match in tears today, going out of the Dubai Open in the first round to Indian Somdev Devvarman due to persistent wrist pains.

The Tandil native, who had reached the semi-final stage in each of his two previous visits to Dubai, was forced to withdraw before the start of the second set, having lost 7-3 in a tie-break to his opponent in the first.

Speaking after the match, Del Potro addressed the possibility of going under the knife to treat the injury, as he did on his right wrist in 2010.

"I cannot speak about surgery yet, but I am feeling similar pains to those which I felt in the other hand four years ago," he confessed.

The world No. 5 admitted that he was frustrated by the withdrawal and his injury troubles, which have plagued him in recent years.

"I cannot be the player I want to be. That is it, that is my present," he lamented.

"It hurts all the time, sometimes more, sometimes less. I am in constant contact with my doctor."
