D’Onofrio supports coach Ramón Díaz
Godoy Cruz wins to share lead
River Plate president Rodolfo D‘Onofrio backed coach Ramón Díaz the day after River’s 3-1 loss against Colón in Santa Fe. Elsewhere, Godoy Cruz defeated Rosario Central 3-0 to share lead of the standings with Colón, San Lorenzo and Estudiantes.
River Plate president Rodolfo D‘Onofrio said yesterday that coach Ramón Díaz “will only leave the club if he fails to revert the current process.” River earned its second loss in a row late on Sunday against Colón 3-1 in Santa Fe city.
D’Onofrio backed Diaz yesterday and added that he plans to have Diaz in charge of the team until the end of his contract.
“Of course he has our full support, the term is given by the end of his contract. But Ramón will leave the club only if he fails to revert the current process. I don’t think that a team led by him could loss five matches,” he said.
D’Onofrio denied being “worried” about the current process and is confident that River will win the next match against San Lorenzo and “correct the direction.”
The president added that he hopes to be able to play this match at the Monumental stadium, which may be sanctioned tomorrow by the Argentine Football Association Security Board due to the attack received by Godoy Cruz player Leandro Grimi in the last home match.
“I am not preoccupied but occupied with the team. I am not the coach. We trust in Diaz’s work”, he said yesterday on Fox Sports TV channel.
Also yesterday, with a hat-trick from Gonzalo Castellani, Godoy Cruz defeated Rosario Central 3-0 in a match of the fourth round of the Final Tournament to share the lead of the standings with Colón, San Lorenzo and Estudiantes with 9 points.
Castellani — former Villarreal of Spain — had a great performance in Mendoza scoring in the 42nd, 49th and 89th minutes to seal the victory.
After its first loss of the tournament, Rosario missed the chance of becoming the sole leader and it has just 7 points.
In another match, Tigre and Argentinos Juniors had an scoreless draw in a bad result for both relegation-threatened teams.
Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata was playing Belgrano last night in the closing match of the round.
