Nadal easily advances in Rio
RIO DE JANEIRO — Top-seeded Rafael Nadal easily advanced to the Rio Open quarterfinals yesterday after beating fellow Spaniard Albert Montañés 6-1 6-2 at the Centre Court. The top-ranked Nadal is coming back from a back injury picked up in the final of the Australian Open, which he lost against Stanislas Wawrinka.
Earlier, Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine advanced to his second quarterfinals of the year when he beat qualifier Facundo Bagnis of Argentina 6-7 (4-7) 6-2 7-6 (7-4)
In Dubai, top-ranked Serena Williams, playing her first tournament since a fourth-round loss at the Australian Open, had little trouble by passing fifth-seeded Jelena Jankovic of Serbia 6-2 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the Dubai Championship, while her sister Venus reached her fourth Dubai semifinal with a 6-3 7-5 win over qualifier Flavia Pennetta of Italy.
