Messi hits from spot as Barca overcome Manchester City

Lionel Messi opened the scoring for Barcelona with a contentious penalty against Manchester City, helping the Spanish giants to a 2-0 Champions League victory in the Etihad Stadium.

With 53 minutes played in the first leg of the last-16 clash, the Argentina captain was chopped down by compatriot Martín Demichelis. The defender had no argument over being shown the red card, but replays showed that the foul appeared to have been committed outside the penalty area.

Nevertheless, Messi had no trouble in picking himself up and sending Joe Hart the wrong way to put his team into the lead, in a match that up to that point had been evenly disputed between the two European powerhouses.

With Manchester City struggling to keep their shape one man down, Brazilian full-back Dani Alves accentuated the Barca advantage in injury time, with a smart finish to convert a rapid Catalan attack.

In the evening's other Champions League clash, Paris Saint-Germain had no trouble in disposing of Bayer Leverkusen away from home.

Two goals from Zlatan Ibrahimovic and further strikes from Blaise Matuidi and Yohan Cabaye rounded off a 4-0 victory for the French team, who were dominant from start to finish in Germany.
