FIFA's Valcke: Curitiba remains World Cup venue

FIFA secretary-general Jerome Valcke has confirmed that Curitiba remains one of the 12 cities that will host games during the 2014 Brazil World Cup, despite concerns over whether facilities at the venue will be ready on schedule.

The official used social networking site Twitter to make the announcement, marking today's deadline for organisers to make a decision on the site that is the most delayed of all 12 stadiums planned for use in Brazil 2014.

"Curitiba confirmed as World Cup venue, based on the financial guarantees, the commitment by all stakeholders & progress made," Valcke affirmed, while adding that there was still work to be done prior to the international football tournament.

"It’s a race against a very tight timeline. Collective effort by all the stakeholders involved in Curitiba must continue at highest pace."

The four games due to be staged at Curitiba's 41,500-capacity stadium are: Iran v Nigeria on June 16, Honduras v Ecuador on June 20, Australia v champions Spain on June 23 and Algeria v Russia on June 26.
